Race Report Canoe Marathon Banyoles 2010

Banyoles welcomed the Canoe Marathon World Championships

Altough the weather did not give them a hand, the small Catalunian village putted up a good show with awesome paddling conditions. Banyoles was the Olympic Venue for Rowing in 1992 Olympics.

The Masters are more and more the joy of the Marathon Racing, they are very serious and intense about their racing, and from our point of view it is a challenge to keep up with their enthusiasm and excitement about their equipment and fittings, that means a lot of work but extremely rewarding!

It is a pity they have to race early in the morning and htan have to move before the real Worlds start, something to be reviewed.

The U23 class is for sure a winner, with great level in all the classes, as any of the winners in this class would have been challenging for the medals also in the Open classes.

The Junior classes are also more and more competitive as many juniors see this a good way of extending their season, and many of the top performers, were the top performers earlier in the year in the canoe sprint. Unfortunately for Brandon van der Walt the curse of the 1st year junior winners is still on, so he could not revalidate his title but it was an extraordinary race, and he should be proud of his work, but the curse is too strong.

The Senior level is pretty high in the top end, but with the opening of the U23, the midlle pack suffered a bit, still that only increased the high level in the front that it is nowadays raced at incredible fast speeds.

From the Nelo point of view, it could hardly get better, we started up in marathon so it is always great to come back and do well, our service guys worked very hard, unfortunately marathon has a bigger risk for equipment what can be frustrating at times, but all part of the game.

K1 - Full podium on the Open, Junior and U23 classes both Men and Women, only exception a medal in the K1 Jun W.
C1 - Gold in both the Open and U 23 class
K2 - 3 out of 4 possible golds, only missed 3 of 12 medals, in all the classes.
C2 - Gold in the Junior Men.
